What is Industry 4.0

Definition

What is Industry 4.0?

Industrial paradigm built on data integration, IoT, AI and automation to turn the plant into a cyber-physical system connected to the business. Captia implements it as one system, not a collection of pilots.

Industry 4.0 is the industrial paradigm built on integrating data, IoT, artificial intelligence and automation to turn the plant into a system connected with the business, so decisions are made on real data in real time. Its defining technology is the cyber-physical system: machines, processes and information systems joined by a shared data layer.

What Industry 4.0 is

Coined in Germany in 2011, the term names a fourth industrial revolution: after steam, electric mass production and electronic automation, the fourth wave is cyber-physical systems. In practice it groups technologies that already exist, such as industrial IoT, edge computing, AI models and digital twins, whose distinctive value is their integration on an OT/IT data foundation.

For an SME it is a sequence, not a leap: diagnose where time and money are lost, connect the data that answers those questions, then automate decisions where the return justifies it. Disconnected pilots that never change the operation are the common failure. Sequencing this is the object of a transformation roadmap.

Frequently asked questions

Why is it called Industry 4.0?
Because it is framed as the fourth industrial revolution: steam mechanisation, electric mass production, electronic automation, and now the integration of cyber-physical systems: physical processes with digital representation and control. The term was coined in Germany in 2011.
Which technologies make up Industry 4.0?
Most cited are industrial IoT, edge computing, data analytics and AI, digital twins, advanced robotics and additive manufacturing. None is mandatory on its own: what defines the paradigm is integrating them on a common data layer connected to management systems.
Is Industry 4.0 only for large companies?
No. An SME can advance in bounded steps: connecting data from critical lines, automating records currently kept by hand, measuring indicators continuously. Each step should justify itself by improving a concrete indicator, without monolithic platforms or investments.
Where does an Industry 4.0 project start?
With the diagnosis: where the operation loses time and money and which data would be needed to fix it. Then with the connectivity of that data and its use in indicators and decisions. Starting from the technology instead of the problem is the usual cause of pilots that never scale.
