What is Industrial IoT (IIoT)

Definition

What is Industrial IoT (IIoT)?

Network of sensors, actuators and devices specifically designed for industrial environments: ruggedness, latency and security beyond consumer IoT. Captia Connect covers its end-to-end integration.

Industrial IoT (IIoT) is the network of sensors, actuators and connected devices designed for plant environments: it captures physical variables from machines and processes and transports them to analysis and management systems, with ruggedness, latency and security requirements beyond consumer IoT.

What industrial IoT is and how it works

A typical IIoT architecture has three stages: at the source, sensors and equipment generate measurements (often already inside the PLC); at the edge, gateways and edge computing nodes translate plant protocols (OPC-UA, Modbus) and buffer data through outages; in transport, lightweight protocols such as MQTT publish data to a common layer that historians, dashboards and predictive models subscribe to.

For an SME, IIoT is the way to measure what is not measured today without changing machines: a vibration sensor on a critical motor, an energy meter on a line. Start from the variables that answer a concrete question. See sensor connectivity.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between IoT and industrial IoT?
The concept is the same, connected devices generating data, but the requirements differ: IIoT operates in dust, vibration and temperature extremes, needs communications that survive network outages, and its security affects physical processes. It also coexists with industrial protocols (OPC-UA, Modbus) absent from consumer IoT.
Do machines need to be replaced to apply industrial IoT?
No. Many variables already exist inside machine PLCs and only need to be read over standard protocols. When a measurement does not exist, an external sensor (vibration, temperature, consumption) is added without modifying the equipment.
Which protocols are used in industrial IoT?
On the plant side, industrial protocols such as OPC-UA and Modbus to read equipment; for transport, lightweight publish/subscribe protocols such as MQTT, which tolerates constrained networks and decouples data producers from consumers. Edge gateways translate between both worlds.
Where does an IIoT project start in an SME?
With a concrete question: which asset to monitor, which consumption to control, which record is kept by hand today. From there you decide which variables to capture and with which sensors. Instrumenting without a question produces data nobody consults.
