Ignition, by Inductive Automation, is one of the most widely deployed SCADA and IIoT platforms in the world, and there are projects where it remains the best choice. But its per-server licensing model, on-premise deployment and reliance on certified integrators do not fit every case, especially for Spanish industrial SMEs looking for a managed web platform, nearby support and built-in artificial intelligence. This guide reviews what Ignition offers, which criteria to use when comparing, and which alternatives exist in Spain, including our own: the honest recommendation depends on the case, and we say so where it applies.
Why look for alternatives to Ignition
Nobody looks for alternatives to a tool that works for them. The reasons we see most often in Spanish plants are four:
- Deployment model. Ignition is software you install and administer on your own server. That gives full control, but it demands infrastructure, maintenance, upgrades and backups from the customer or their integrator. Not every SME wants to take on that role.
- Technical profile required. Getting value out of Ignition means designing and developing the application: screens, scripting, data model. It is a platform to build with, not a ready-to-use product. Without an in-house team or a trusted integrator nearby, the project gets longer and more expensive.
- Support and proximity. Inductive Automation is a US company that works in Spain through its integrator network. For many plants, having the platform vendor one phone call away, in their own language, weighs as much as any feature.
- Analytics and AI. Ignition solves supervision and control very well. The advanced analytics layer (anomaly detection, predictive models, optimisation) is built on top with additional development or third-party tools; it does not come integrated as a product.
What Ignition offers and where it is strong
Before comparing, it is worth acknowledging what Ignition does exceptionally well, because a comparison that ignores it is useless for deciding:
- Per-server licensing with no tag or client limits. It is licensed by the server, with unlimited tags, clients and device connections. For large installations with hundreds of thousands of signals, that model is very competitive against per-point licensing.
- Modular architecture. The platform is made up of modules (visualisation with Perspective and Vision, reporting, alarm notification, among others) that are added as needed.
- Perspective. Its HTML5 visualisation module builds screens that run in the browser and on mobile, a clear step up from the classic thick-client SCADA.
- Maturity and ecosystem. It is a well-established platform on the market, with a large community, extensive documentation, its own training and an international network of certified integrators. That ecosystem reduces risk in large, complex projects.
If your project is a large installation, with an in-house engineering team or a certified integrator nearby, and you want to build a bespoke SCADA application on your own server, Ignition is hard to beat. The alternatives make sense when the case is different.
Criteria for comparing alternatives
We recommend evaluating any alternative (ours included) against these five criteria, in this order:
- Real connectivity with your machine fleet. Which protocols the platform speaks (OPC UA, Modbus, MQTT, meters) and whether it can read your specific machines without bespoke development.
- Deployment and operating model. Who administers the server, who upgrades, who responds if something fails on a Sunday. Installed software demands a team; a managed service moves that to the vendor.
- Total cost, not just licence. Licence, server, integration, screen development, annual maintenance and every future extension. Ignition's per-server model is attractive at scale and less relevant in a plant with two lines.
- Analytics included versus analytics built. If the end goal is predicting downtime or optimising consumption, it matters whether the platform ships those models or they must be developed on top.
- Support in your language and time zone. Who answers, how fast, and whether they know your installation.

How to choose for your case
The decision gets simpler if you start from the case rather than the catalogue. With an in-house engineering team, hundreds of thousands of signals and the intention of building a bespoke application on your own infrastructure, Ignition is the natural candidate. If the challenge is purely data integration between systems, a specialised connectivity tool may be enough.
